Laminated Fins
The fins for the booster
section of the rocket are made up of a layer of 1/8" (5ply) birch, 6 oz fiberglass cloth and a layer of 3/16"
(10ply) birch. The fins for the sustainer section are made up of two layers of 1/8" (5ply) birch and 6
oz fiberglass cloth. I used West Systems epoxy to bond the two layers of plywood with the cloth located in the middle. It
was all done on a 1/2" thick plate of glass with a 1/2" steel plate on top to apply even weight to insure a good
bond. I have used this process on the last couple of projects to help take out any warps in the plywood as well as to add
strength. I think it helps minimize the spin of the rocket under thrust which is important for the on board video.
